What’s up with that name?

This week, we are revisiting a previous post…..after many recent questions regarding our name, we thought we would share again…..

What’s up with that name ?
Just this week a customer commented on the name, Aggressive Appliances….he said he walked in expecting an “aggressive” sales person to attack, but was pleasantly surprised when he was treated in a non-aggressive manner, and so appreciated the attention to detail and a relaxing shopping experience.  We thought we would share a bit about our name and the owners that are behind it…………
When Jerry Jaskot, a PE teacher and coach, decided to go into business in 1980 he believed being aggressive to be a positive attribute, plus it would get them first in the phonebook (remember those things?). Over the years there have been no shortage of smiles, smirks, and puzzled looks; but you must admit the name kind of sticks.
Our purpose is to help people purchase and fully enjoy their appliances to their full extent. Our team shares this commitment and we believe the profit will come as a result of doing business with this purpose in mind. Our customer base continues to grow and we are so pleased to say that at least 85% of our new customers are referred to us by loyal customers. We’re humbled by this kind of trust and it solidifies our resolve to be a business with a conscience.

Jaskot’s only frame of reference in the world of business was as a customer. Over time, he realized he also needed to make a profit (that occurred coincidentally when he ran out of money, lol) in order to stay in business. This led to the development of Jerry’s business philosophy which is about building value for not only customers, team members, suppliers, and the community, and then trusting that profit would be a result of rather than seeking profit above all.

Jerry and Cheryl continue to proudly lead Aggressive Appliances with their unique expertise, and most importantly their passionate commitment to service. Their son, Jeff, shares this passionate commitment and has been involved in the company’s leadership since 2009 when he completed his military service.

Our Service Story

A  well written article by Steve the owner/CEO of Yale Appliance in Boston entitled “Why doesn’t every appliance brand and store offer service?” has inspired me to share our story as it pertains to service.
Click here to read Yale blog

Here’s our service story. I’ve got a short version of a long story. That’s still a long story, so I’ll do the abbreviated version of the short version.

In 1980, when we started, most appliance dealerships didn’t offer in-house service (most still don’t); our company, like every other appliance dealership would refer our customers to service companies when their appliances broke. Around 1983, we supplemented these referrals with techs we hired so that we could be more responsive. This went on for 2 decades and was a bit better than the dealers we were in competition with. After reading “Good to Great” by Jim Collins in 2002, everything changed. Being good was no longer the goal, we needed to set our sights on being great. High end appliance sales were increasing at that time and the service providers we referred to seemed to care less and less about the customer’s experience (they were being put through the wringer; Ok, I promise no more appliance puns). The time for half measures had passed and we needed to build a service department for our customers that would be great. I was soon to learn why appliance dealers no longer offered service. Everything about service would prove to be difficult. Folks who call in for service are understandably upset because their product is broken; our customer service agents taking these calls need to be empathetic, efficient, and able to juggle 5 balls with one hand. Hiring competent technicians would prove to be near impossible as Vo-Tech centers have quit teaching appliance repair (eventually we started our own tech apprenticeship program). I could go on and on about our difficulties, but this is the abbreviated version of the short version, really! Fast forward to 2009, my son Jeff joined Aggressive as the service manager and grew this department dramatically through the recession years; that in and of itself speaks volumes for Jeff and the dire need for great service in our industry. As of this writing we employ 9 service techs, 14 installation specialists, 5 CSRs, and 2 managers. We still believe that “good is the enemy of great”, and to that end we roll up our sleeves everyday (except Sunday) and are determined that nothing short of great is good enough for our customers.

Built Better to Last Longer

You can probably still hear the lingering fireworks from the person in your neighborhood that has decided to shoot off the final few leftovers in their arsenal.  Our 4th of July celebrations, American flags on display and everything red, white and blue just occurred in towns and cities all across America.  We Americans love to celebrate our country.

Let’s take a moment to celebrate some American made products from a company headquartered in Ripon, Wisconsin.  The Speed Queen washer and dryers are commercial quality units, the biggest difference between the commercial and residential units is the coin slot.

Speed Queen washers and dryers also carry a 5 year warranty, with a life expectancy of 25 years. This brand carries a reputation of being highly durable, having no frills and superior quality.   Please take a moment and watch the video below…..a real life commentary that speaks to the performance of Speed Queen.

Stop by the showroom and let our sales staff show you our display of Speed Queen laundry….we have an impressive display of laundry product including a variety of brands and price ranges, I am confident we can help you find the perfect match for you and all your laundry needs.

It’s Hot…..We’ve Got Ice !

It’s Hot…We’ve got Ice !

I think every person that has walked through our doors today has said,” it is so hot outside”…yes, it is summer and July is here.  To help cool you off, make your drinks nice and icy, or maybe you need a few ice cubes to throw down your shirt….we’ve got ice, and a variety of Ice machines on display, ready for you to see up close and personal.

We don’t actually sell machines that make heart shaped ice… but that would be awesome and we do love our ice !

At Aggressive, we carry a good variety of Ice Machines, not to be confused with the Ice Makers that live inside your freezer. Ice machines are under counter units, in our showroom we have the following brands(in alphabetical order) ~ GE Monogram, Kitchen-Aid, Manitowoc, Marvel, True, SubZero, Uline and Whirlpool. ….and even better, our machines are “live” so you can grab some cubes, and taste and sample while you shop.

The ice cubes produced by these machines have unique shapes, are actually quite beautiful, and several machines produce similar shaped cubes….each brand mentioned will be highlighted with a link to their respective websites for you to see specifications and a general idea of pricing.

Ice from Subzero and Manitowoc machines…clear, with no odor and clean taste due to excellent filtration system, have unique octagonal shape and melts slowly.

Ice from Scotsman Brilliance, GE Monogram and True clear ice machines… won’t clump or dilute drinks, also melts slowly and cools drinks quickly.

Ice from Kitchen-Aid, Jenn-Air , Whirlpool and Marvel…clear ice, water filtration system, shape takes up less room in your glass.

Ice from Uline ice machine…clean and clear, unique shape.

Nugget ice from Scotsman machine… compared to “Sonic” ice, soft and chewable and a favorite of our staff.

This is only a sampling of the ice machines available, our sales staff will help guide you to the best machine to fit your needs and your space.  It’s hot….stop by the showroom, sample some ice and discover which machine you can’t live without.

Hurricanes and Appliances

We are bringing back a previous blog from Appliance Boy to get us ready for the hurricane season.   In Florida, our season runs from early June to November.  The peak is from mid- August to late October.

“Is there anything that I can do to get my appliances ready for a hurricane?”
Fear not, APPLIANCE BOY is here to help.
img_0064

While some might view this as a ridiculous question, there are several things that you can do regarding your appliances to help, or at least minimize headaches after the fact.hurricane

Water: I will start by saying that water is not good for electronics. Hopefully water intrusion won’t be a major issue for most people in Central Florida, but it might be for our friends and family closer to the coast. If you think you will be facing a major threat of flooding, unplug the appliance or flip the breaker to it. Do not turn it back on until you are reasonably sure that any electrical components are dried out. (Think of a cell phone)

Power surges: These are a higher likelihood for many of us as lightning increases in proximity to the storm. If you do not have surge protectors or are worried about some of the complicated electronics in your appliances, it is not a bad idea to unplug them or flip the breakers to those units. If they are built-in appliances and you don’t have access to the plugs, flip the breakers.
What if you lose power?  Do not panic, your refrigerator can work like a large Igloo ™ cooler. Keep in mind however, that anytime you open it with no power you will be letting cold air out and it will begin warming up. Frozen foods and ice will begin to melt. When the ice melts it will probably start to leak out of your freezer onto your floor. Remove the ice bucket and use it in your cooler to help keep those foods cool. To prep for the storm put as many bottles of water into your freezer as possible so that you have a higher ice load to maintain the cold. Remember that water expands when it freezes so drain a little off before you put them in. If you lose power you can move some of these to the refrigerator compartment to help keep it cold. It is also a good idea to go ahead and set your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest temperatures.

Flowers for Dinner

I recently visited the BSH Design and Experience Center in Irvine, California…..will go into more detail later about the awesome appliances in this facility, but wanted to share a quick, easy and fun recipe we learned in class.

Squash Blossoms showed up in two meals, once in a  beautiful salad, and for lunch one day our group teamed up and made this unusual side dish.
***Squash blossoms are the edible flowers of the squash plant and usually come in orange and yellow shades. Squash blossoms are soft, delicate, and usually taste mildly like the squash itself.

They are so beautiful….and let’s face it, we don’t get to eat a flower everyday.
We prepared according to the directions, and we basically were spoiled by having all the ingredients
pre-measured and prepped for us…I want to cook this way all the time.

1. In Pan, heat 1/4 inch oil.
2. Dredge squash blossoms in egg wash then in flour.
3. Saute squash blossoms until lightly browned.  Turn and brown on the other side.
4. Remove to sheet pan with rack.
5. Place in warming drawer until ready to serve.
6. Arrange Sautéed Squash Blossoms on serving platters.  Garnish with lemon, parmesan cheese and flaky sea salt.

So easy, and the results were beautiful and delicious !

Now, I don’t know how often, if ever, you will see many squash blossoms to buy, but if you do…..do yourself a favor and treat yourself or impress your friends.

I also picked up a few practical and easy ideas to incorporate into everyday cooking and food presentation….

Simply slice and sear lemons for maximum flavor and use to garnish your salad or incorporate into any dish.

Serve your salad piled up and arranged on a
large cutting board…so pretty!

Also, any meal is easier to prepare when 15 people are doing the cooking….breathtaking meals came together so fast!

The Bosch and Thermador kitchens where cooking and training took place were a great environment to see, touch and experience the state of the art appliances belonging to these two brands.

As impressive as the design center was, I realized how fortunate our customers and sales staff are to be able to show off appliances in our “live” kitchens as well.  Our showroom is unique and there is the opportunity to have a sales associate demo many of our appliances when you visit.

Another blog will go into more detail and highlight the outstanding appliances we used in the BSH Design and Experience Center.

Steam = Success !

(a “little” prior to 1980)

When Aggressive opened its doors in 1980, the microwave oven was cutting edge technology.
Since then, we’ve had a bunch of innovative cooking products introduced, some with success, others, not so much (a refrigerating range comes to mind).  In this brief article, let’s look at one of the great success stories, which in fact has become a whole new category of cooking products:  convection steam ovens.

These ovens not only work miracles with leftovers (revitalizing even pizza!), but they are the absolute healthiest way to cook vegetables; allowing them to retain 100% of their nutrients – nothing is lost. Convection steam as the name indicates is a combination of fan forced heat and steam acting on the food. Miele has a steam only product, but they also have a combi-steam which is more versatile.

At present we offer these products by Bosch, Gaggenau,Jenn-Air, Miele, Sharp, Thermador, Viking, and Wolf (alphabetical order).

The prices range from the lowest priced unit (Sharp) at $2,779, to the Gaggenau at $8,199.

Make a visit to our showroom to see
the wonders of the Steam Oven for yourself…we have many on display in our “live” kitchens.

Now we’re smokin’….with the Memphis Grill

If you aren’t familiar with the Memphis Pellet Grill…here are some highlights:
•This grill offers stainless steel construction, a large cooking temperature cooking range (high-temperature searing to low-and-slow smoking), and it is made in the USA.
•Memphis Elite and Pro models are double-walled constructed, providing the best insulation required for easily maintaining temperature, regardless of what the outside environment is like.
•This grill has one of the largest hopper capacities in the industry, giving you the ability to cook up to an impressive 60 hours.
•Memphis installs 2 internal convection fans that circulate the heat, making it one of the most even cooking convection pellet grills on the market.
•The wood pellets are 100% natural hardwood available in six flavor varieties, they create less ash than charcoal and are an easy to use renewable resource.
•This grill is available as a built-in, as well as a freestanding model, giving homeowners the option to include a pellet grill as a built-in outdoor kitchen appliance.
•Memphis Grills are backed by a 7 year warranty, however, they are one of the best built pellet grills you can buy…you can rely on them lasting for many years.

The ribs and chicken turned out awesome……..

This month, let me introduce you to Kenny Kolaiah.
Kenny has been cooking and selling BBQ for the last 9 years and has gradually started doing small caterings like family reunions, parties, etc.  He was working full time with Orange County Public Schools and after working his business on the side, decided to quit his job and pursue a career change.  During the difficult time of trying to build his business, he hit a few bumps in the road and had to work odd jobs to make ends meet….at this time he discovered and applied for the Second Harvest Culinary Training Program.

4cf4fe54-314c-4c6d-afc8-f9992942c158Upon completing the program, he accepted a position at Isleworth Country Club and worked there for a year while building his catering business. It should always be National Grilled Cheese Month

We are not really sure who decides this, but April is National Grilled Cheese Month…we feel the only honorable thing to do is celebrate and embrace it.

In our showroom, our favorite way to make a grilled cheese sandwich is in the GE Monogram Advantium Oven.  We have a live unit in our Monogram kitchen and while this oven has many features and capabilities, you just can’t beat the way this oven makes an awesome grilled cheese.

5a0c4257-9be5-4b0c-b7dd-0b5f1d1d410a

Before we get to the food pictures, the Advantium Oven is in a class by itself…a brief description of its attributes are as follows:
–  Advantium technology harnesses the power of light.  The outside of the food is cooked like a conventional oven, with radiant heat produced by halogen bulbs above and below the food.  This halogen-produced heat receives a boost of microwave energy.
–  Foods brown and cook evenly and fast, while retaining their natural moisture.
–  Advantium offers 4 ovens in 1…..Speedcook, True European Convection, Sensor Microwave, and Warming/Proofing ovens…..and comes in several different configurations to fit any kitchen design.
–  Delivers oven-quality results 2 – 8 times faster that a conventional oven….no preheating required.

The Advantium Oven is offered across the GE lines of Monogram, Profile and Café…the differences have to do with whether the oven is installed as an over-the-range classification, built-in, or based on specifications regarding which voltage is required.  Here is a link to more info and specs on the GE Advantium Oven.

Now back to making an amazing grilled cheese sandwich…after all, there is a month dedicated to its awesomeness.

The Advantium gives you foolproof digital options to scroll through and find just the right selection to make your sandwich……

1e74f15d-769b-4475-b310-759320262768  There are far too many features and capabilities of this oven to be able to list here, stop by our showroom, let a sales associate demonstrate in our live kitchen and take one for a spin.  Several of our team members own one and are more than happy to sing its praises.
