Why are grills so expensive?!

If you have ever bought a grill at one of the big box stores, it can make our grills that start about $1000 and up (way up…way, way up) seem kind of pricey. What are you getting with a $3999 DCS, $5769 Wolf or a $12,999 Alfresco that you do not get with a $199 Memorial Day promo grill? BTU’s and longer life are the key benefits.

I was at my sister’s house a few weeks ago. She lives out of state and can’t easily buy appliances from us, so don’t judge her. As the appliance expert of the family, she asked me to look at her grill. Without even walking outside, I told her that her hardware store grill is only good for about two or three years and then maybe you can replace a few parts and get another year out of it. When I looked at it, I was exactly correct. Even though it has stainless steel burners and stainless flame tamers, they do not use the same grade or gauge metal as the premium brands. In her case, the caps over the burners that even out the heat were a pile of rust and the stainless base plate had so much rust that the brackets holding up the drip pan were gone. I was able to wire some things together and get one more season out of her grill.

Our premium brand grills typically have lifetime warranties on most of their stainless steel components. That doesn’t mean you can forget about maintenance. The burners, grates, fireboxes and other heat zone components are built of much thicker gauge material that last much longer. The other big advantage is that our grills are much hotter. If you want to sear a steak the way Ruth’s Chris does, you need a thousand or more degrees. The main burners from our grills are often 25,000 btu’s or higher. Alfresco’s sear zone will hit 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit. At that temperature, you can create a great crust on your steak so quickly that you can keep a great rare zone in the middle.

I don’t want to say that you cannot successfully cook on a less expensive grill; I did for years. Now that I have a great DCS grill, I can say without reservation that my ability to cook great meals has gone up substantially. Cater to Me

MikeCaterMike, one of our sales team members, had a call come in from a client the other day who also happens to be a chef. As he was accustomed to using full sheet catering pans in his restaurant, he was interested in a range that would accept full sheet pans to accommodate his creations at home. Wanting to confirm which models would work, we started going from product to product putting each to the test. We carry all of the leading brands and display them on our floor. That made it very easy to find out.

So what did we find out?

We found that DCS, Dacor, Thermador Pro Grand, MONOGRAM, and BlueStar in 36″ and 48″ ranges are all able to accommodate a full sheet catering pan.

It should be noted that not all clients need that feature in their range. I know personally I have gone my whole life and have not needed to use a full sheet catering pan. I’ve even been known to cook up a storm in a 20″ range that I dubbed my “Easy Bake Oven”. However, if you do have the need, it is great to know there are plenty of fantastic options (that we carry and you can test) right here to choose from in our showroom without having to own or visit a restaurant with a commercial range! As if we didn’t love him enough already..our dear DCS by Fisher & Paykel rep, Dan Trbovich, came by this last Tuesday to grill up lunch on a DCS grill for our ENTIRE staff. Our own Doug White was on hand helping because, well, he rocks! (cue air guitar). Together they grilled up delicious steaks, chicken, portobello mushrooms, onions, and pineapple. We baked up potatoes inside, while Mike Davidson shared his decadent smoked fish spread.

The steaks were outrageous!!!! The onions were so sweet!!! The grilled pineapple? Succulent candy!! I thoroughly encourage any one of you to sink your teeth into the features that are offered by a DCS outdoor grill that result in such deliciousness pictured here.

With their full surface super searing grill, grease management system, smoker box, infrared rotisserie, along with grilling and griddle accessory options, it’s no shock we all enjoyed some seriously soul satisfying food!!! This is one hot grill!! While our menu had hearty meats, veggies, and fruit, DCS grills can delicately handle fish as well. Yes! Yes! We have DCS grills here for you to see!!! Some of our staff own DCS grills and can first hand tell you how they use and love them. I’ve cooked on one myself. After the belly stuffing meal we enjoyed I can assure you this isn’t the first time I’ve had a fantastic feast on a DCS grill and it definitely won’t be the last!

DCS by Fisher & Paykel has a quiet history since they don’t spend a ton of money on marketing; however, other well known names have used DCS in their lineups.  They began in 1988 in California when a commercial range was custom built for use in a residential application. Realizing they had a great product to offer to the masses they started selling their recipe for quality and function to companies such as Viking, Thermador, GE Monogram, and JennAir. Yup. Last week I was whisked away to Boston, along with a crew of 9 equally appliance enthused (I’m not being sarcastic here, we love appliances that much!) sales reps from all over the USA, to take a few succulent bites into the world of DCS by Fisher & Paykel. To mix it up, we weren’t trained in a DCS facility, but in America’s Test Kitchen. ATK’s founder, Chris Kimball, has DCS in his personal kitchens, which prompted his natural choice of DCS appliances in ATK’s kitchens.

ATK’s home is tucked away in an old building in Boston complete with a maze of quirky turns, steps, food, and dining tables with a backdrop of old school, historic charm. We were graciously welcomed by ATK to cook, learn, laugh, and eat within their bustling cooking, testing, and tasting world. In this cozy setting we learned DCS is truly a powerhouse of quality, function, and is user friendly whether you’re a master chef, a weekend cooking warrior, or a 30 minute weeknight meal maker. Using ATK recipes, mouth watering, waist growing meals were created by us all while learning hands on just how fun and easy DCS is to use.
