If Irma visits your Appliances…

Our state has an unwelcome houseguest arriving this weekend, and although we are not exactly sure how she will arrive, her reputation precedes her as destructive and unruly…..the houseguest you don’t want to visit.

We have revived a previous blog detailing some precautionary things you can do to prepare your appliances for the upcoming storm.
Our store will be closed on Monday, and hopefully, we will be able to be back to normal business on Tuesday….but, we will be making decisions as we see the status and outcome of Irma.  We are trying our best to accommodate our customers with delivery, install and service schedules all while being mindful of our employees and their safety being on the roads.

We are hopeful Irma will be attracted back to the warm waters of the Atlantic and spares most of our state from the chaos she carries.   In the meantime, we look forward to a normal business week of talking about and focusing on all things appliances…..and as always, we wish the best for our community.

“Is there anything that I can do to get my appliances ready for a hurricane?”
Fear not, APPLIANCE BOY is here to help.

While some might view this as a ridiculous question, there are several things that you can do regarding your appliances to help, or at least minimize headaches after the fact.

Water:
I will start by saying that water is not good for electronics. Hopefully water intrusion won’t be a major issue for most people in Central Florida, but it might be for our friends and family closer to the coast. If you think you will be facing a major threat of flooding, unplug the appliance or flip the breaker to it. Do not turn it back on until you are reasonably sure that any electrical components are dried out. (Think of a cell phone)

Power surges:
These are a higher likelihood for many of us as lightning increases in proximity to the storm. If you do not have surge protectors or are worried about some of the complicated electronics in your appliances, it is not a bad idea to unplug them or flip the breakers to those units. If they are built-in appliances and you don’t have access to the plugs, flip the breakers.

What if you lose power?
Do not panic, your refrigerator can work like a large Igloo ™ cooler. Keep in mind however, that anytime you open it with no power you will be letting cold air out and it will begin warming up. Frozen foods and ice will begin to melt. When the ice melts it will probably start to leak out of your freezer onto your floor. Remove the ice bucket and use it in your cooler to help keep those foods cool. To prep for the storm put as many bottles of water into your freezer as possible so that you have a higher ice load to maintain the cold. Remember that water expands when it freezes so drain a little off before you put them in. If you lose power you can move some of these to the refrigerator compartment to help keep it cold. It is also a good idea to go ahead and set your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest temperatures.

The Language of Appliances

The Language of Appliances…

French door isn’t just an option to replace sliding glass doors, Columns aren’t just an architectural element to hold up a ceiling, Built-In isn’t always a term used in building bookcases, Steam can be a type of  appliance, and not just what we see on the hot asphalt on a lovely muggy rainy Florida day…..

If you have been appliance shopping recently, you most likely heard a lot of new terms relating to appliances and their features and functions….and, if you are getting ready to be on the hunt for a new appliance, refer to this handy guide to help you with your shopping experience.   This is by no means a comprehensive list, but a few terms to get you started……

COOKING :

– A Range is a unit with either burners or a glass cooktop and an oven, they are made to slide in, or can be built in.
Induction is not new, but is getting more popular and is being offered by many brands.  Induction cooking heats a cooking vessel by magnetic induction, as opposed to heating from a flame or an electrical heating element.  Induction cooking requires pans/cooking vessels to contain a ferromagnetic metal.
Dual Fuel appliances use both electricity and gas.
Speed Cooking is a feature using Advantium technology to cook food through the power of light.  Radiant heat is produced by halogen bulbs above and below the food, adding a boost of microwave energy, cooking food quickly and evenly.
Cooktop/Rangetop is a stand alone cooking surface that does not include an oven, is installed in the countertop.

Steam Ovens basically cook with steam….shocking….typically there is a water reservoir and most also use Convection, a cooking method that circulates hot air around food to cook it faster than conventional ovens.
French Door wall ovens have 2 doors that open on a single oven, creating an ease of accessing the inside of oven without having to reach over the drop down door.
REFRIGERATION:
Built-In/Counter Depth refrigerators are the same depth as your counters so they sit flush.
Freestanding/Slide-In appliances simply slide in the space and they don’t require cabinet alterations.
French Door refrigerators have 2 doors and 1 drawer below containing the freezer.
French Door Refrigerator
Side by Side refrigerators have 2 doors, one side is refrigerator, other side is freezer.
Under Counter refrigeration applies to wine coolers, beverage centers, and ice makers that are made to fit under the counter.
Columns are freezer and refrigerator units that can be installed separately from each other.

Integrated appliances have panels installed on the front and disappear into the cabinetry.
Have you walked in an appliance store saying I just want a Refrigerator, an Oven, or a Stove….only to find out things have changed…. so many types and choices now.  Please visit our showroom and let one of our sales associates answer your questions, and  guide you through 10,000 sq ft of beautiful shopping space.

Duck, Duck, Chicken…..Goose Eggs !

It is Easter weekend and eggs are everywhere…..plastic eggs, colorful eggs, and boiled eggs.  Parents everywhere will be boiling eggs for their children to dye, decorate and then search for them outside….only for a few to be erroneously found in the heat of the following days.

2f7b30c0-d9d6-4683-9567-a63c00039a24One of the perks of our showroom is our plethora of live kitchens, we are able to demo a variety of appliances and enable customers to get an up-close and personal look before they purchase.
Recently, one of our owners brought in some fresh duck, goose, and chicken eggs.

553ab04c-3729-4f41-8751-68cce4c7992f

We immediately thought we should “boil” them using one of our steam ovens….and we went to the Wolf Convection Steam Oven. When was the last time you changed the way you boiled eggs? New technology in appliances has certainly brought us many shortcuts to spending hours in the kitchen….induction cooktops can cut your boiling time into less than half, speed ovens greatly reduce your baking time, but you can’t perfectly boil your eggs this way without a steam oven.

bc9ecee6-87f6-4c1b-9d99-2936d54f3d42

We actually put the eggs in the steam oven on a cardboard holder, which we don’t recommend….steam created a slightly soggy egg holder, but they cooked perfectly regardless.

3a3bfe25-131e-4f69-b998-7545dd49fbd3

The eggs were varied sizes and the oven was set at 210 degrees, then give or take 18 minutes, all the eggs were finished to perfection.  There was no pot of boiling water to watch, trying to guess just how long to leave them on the cooktop….instead, we found the right setting on the display and the oven’s digital technology took away all the guesswork.

A new way of boiling provided beautifully cooked yolks with eggs supplied by a duck, a goose and a chicken.
76be4c95-0176-40f8-bbe5-17c5d00915d0  Steam Ovens are unique, they might possibly be considered the most versatile oven.  Where else can leftovers be reheated to taste better than when originally prepared, a stale croissant rejuvenated to crispy fresh and steamed veggies retain more vitamins….only in a Steam Oven.  Click on the link to see a couple videos and view more details about this cutting edge technology appliance.

Steam ovens are still one of the relatively newer appliances to hit the market…..our sales staff loves to use them and show them to customers.    There are several misconceptions associated with the steam oven – they look too small, they don’t seem like they would perform multiple functions, and why do I need another cooking  appliance in my kitchen?
A lot of food makes it way through our showroom live kitchens and into the mouths of our staff and customers.   Recently, one of our vendors treated us to lunch and provided  massive amounts of food from Tijuana Flats, we made a good dent but had lots of leftovers.

536e714e-7e71-4c45-8364-83075d469f00

We fit 8 leftover containers into 2 steam ovens to reheat…..the Bosch and the Jenn-Air. I was a doubter about their ability to hold all the containers, but I was proved wrong.    They were not too small.

f093b2ac-009f-4c90-919b-b1c3f19d1972

We were able to heat large amounts of food in just 2 steam ovens.  One of the great qualities of heating with steam is, you have the advantage of adding moisture back in to your food resulting in leftovers that are not dried out and often taste better the second time around.

This blog is singing the praises of elevating the taste, and saving the life of leftovers by using the wonderful steam oven.  Steam ovens are way more than a means to heat up leftovers…..they will crisp food while maintaining the moisture, they have the space and ability to cook the whole meal from veggies to meats in one appliance, there are pre-set modes to perform multiple functions from defrosting to making perfect boiled eggs  or the flakiest pastry.

Bosch and Jenn-Air both have great Steam Ovens – they have the same steam, convection, and combo steam-convection features.  The Jenn-Air has a slightly slower convection preheat, but the Jenn-Air model is 110 volts and works great in remodels without 240 volt connections.

The misconceptions about steam ovens are wrong….they look small, but hold a lot – they cook everything from a Beef Wellington to simply reheating multiple foods – and as far as concerns over adding an additional appliance in the kitchen, no other appliance can accomplish this much using such a small footprint of space.
Look out for future blogs that will go into further detail regarding the features on the multitude of amazing steam ovens we display in our showroom.

We have a New Kitchen

Change is good, it’s a sign of progress and keeps things interesting.  Our showroom is ever changing, appliances are always being updated and vendors love for us to display their latest and greatest products.

Our most recent change is our new Thermador kitchen, the folks at Thermador called on Jack Busby with Busby Cabinets to collaborate on designing a fresh new look for this kitchen.  Jack and his team came up with an efficient design incorporating an impressive display showcasing over 25 appliances.

We took out the existing cabinets and appliances, and put in a new floor….

…and in just a short time a beautiful new kitchen emerged….

You really need to stop by the showroom to see this kitchen for yourself, and see these appliances up close and personal.

In the meantime, here are a few highlights to consider….

The Thermador 60″ range is pretty new and is one of the only ranges whose oven will hold full size baking/catering sheet pans. If you buy one of these ranges before the end of the year, you get 2 free dishwashers.

0f6658b0-1381-4f8a-b5dc-db00a88b2313  Thermador’s great new coffee machine is stacked over their double drawer refrigerator in our new kitchen.  This combo makes a nearly perfect drink station.  You have a cold spot for your milk or creamers, as well as your other favorite cold drinks.  If you prefer a hot drink, your coffee machine is right there to make an espresso, cappuccino, latte, Americano, tea, or cocoa.

fe303aa1-0d02-4dc5-8ff3-a93b49effe31 Thermador also has a One-Two-Free promotion…buy a cooktop and oven (or range) to get a free dishwasher, add a built-in refrigerator and Thermador throws in a free exhaust hood (or microdrawer or extra dishwasher).

Why yes, I would love a cup of coffee….

2016-12-02-17-38-52

We sell an amazing diverse selection of appliances…every size, price range and brand….but, there is an appliance that is visited daily, hourly, and often has several of us singing its praises, it is the Coffee Machine.
When a customer walks in our doors they are greeted with…….would you like a bottle of water, a cup of coffee, cappuccino, latte or even an espresso ?   No, you are not at Starbucks, and we will not incorrectly write your name on a paper cup and ask for a debit card or $20…we just love to show off the brewing capabilities of our ‘live’ coffee systems.
The newest machine to be installed, and the one we have been playing with, and critiquing is from Bosch, and it just looks cool….so sleek, and high appeal for techies with wifi capability using Home Connect.   It is very user friendly, and they made the dial selector a little too fun to play with, as you are able to spin the finger touch sensitive wheel around to choose the perfect drink, temperature, strength and size.
To fully appreciate these machines and discover which one you can’t live without, you really need to visit our showroom, test drive one for yourself…and enjoy.

2016-12-03-10-36-52

While all these awesome coffee systems are mechanical dreams producing the perfect cup of happy….they are nothing without the correct coffee bean.   Rule number one is, you can’t use an oily bean….ever……it will clog up the system and result in a maintenance issue and maybe a service call (which, we can help with that too…don’t forget, we have an in-house service department). Beans need to be dry, and while taste is subjective, as freshly roasted as possible produces the best cup of coffee.

I recently was referred to Foxtail Coffee, newly opened in Winter Park…I stopped by, met the owners and fell in love with their space, their coffee beans… and they both couldn’t have been more friendly and willing to let me sample a cold brew as I walked out the door with 10 lbs of freshly roasted beans.   If you stop by their place you won’t be disappointed, we are proud to now be using Foxtail roasted coffee beans in our showroom.  FYI….their grand opening is this weekend.

If you are in the market for your own personal barista in the form of a coffee machine, stop by our showroom, have a cup of coffee and let one of our sales associates connect you to the perfect match for you.

You Don’t Have to Push My Buttons

FrigProInd2Recently product info came across my desk that got me pretty psyched that there is another option for induction drop-in cooktops about to hit the market this fall. When these pieces hit the market they will be one of the few manufacturers to offer one very important feature in the drop-in induction cooktop category….knob controls. If you’ve shied away from tap and smooth touch controls in an induction cooktop, you might want to keep reading.FrigProLogo1

Frigidaire Professional series is coming out in the 3rd quarter of this year with their 30″ and 36″ knob controlled induction cooktop. The MSRP is $1949 on the 30″ and $1999 on the 36″ option, which is significantly lower than Viking and Gaggenau, but just a little lower than Big Chill (other brands offering knob controls for a drop-in, built-in induction cooktop).

FrigProInd3

The 36″ model boasts one 10″ induction element with a min/max wattage of 2500W/3800W, one 8″ induction element of 2300W/3200W, two 7″ of 1800W/2600W, and one 6″ of 1450W/2000W. When using the knob the control knob will allow you to adjust between high and low, as well as increments of .5 between 1.5 and 9. The screen above the knob will display the power level.

FrigProInd5

Having options on the market for a drop-in induction cooktop will open up this type of cooking to clients that are unable to use touch controls and/or may be looking for a more budget friendly choice with design elements that pair up well with the whole Frigidaire Professional kitchen suite.

Fight Like a Viking

11873 1000_VIKING_PRAs a dealer we are invited to learn and cook on many manufacturer products. This week in my appliance adventures I flew into Georgia with healthy skepticism of the Viking product line.  Because I’m such an appliance geek, what I learned surprised and excited me. Viking keeps fighting…

Since being purchased in 2013 by Middleby Corporation, a leader in commercial kitchen technology, Viking has reinvented and revitalized their brand. Let me take you on a mini tour of how they’ve done that.

VikingCooktops2

Infrared broil technology in their electric ovens, and a carpet of broiling fire in their gas ovens, was really something to watch and use. The power of their induction elements and knob-controlled cooktops open up the market for those wanting more speed and/or have difficulty using electronic touch controls.

VikingBroiler

Learning the various ways to use a warming drawer for slow cooking recipes will make this a must have piece in any kitchen. They also offer the only combi-steam-bake-convection microwave on the market. But by far the most impressive of their commercial technology is due out on the market this year with the introduction of the Turbochef oven to the residential market.

TurboChef

Turbochef uses radiant heat, microwaves, and convection in a way that will take our fast pace cooking to a whole new level. It’s used daily in well known companies commercially to speed up cooking, crisping, and baking to minutes instead of hours. Baked potatoes, French fries, breads, meats, desserts, you name it…done in minutes. Imagine a whole meal cooked for a large crowd in 20 minutes. This is the future and the future is knocking hard and fast on our kitchen doors. Wait for it….

VikingCoke

Refrigeration in Viking has major changes (thankfully). The free-standing, counter-depth piece pictured above is the only piece made by another company….but since it was filled with Coke products….it deserved a picture here. Their built-in products have better hinges and the addition of their Ion Purification System called the “Plasmacluster System”. This type of purification is used in the medical field and the military to clean bacteria from the air and aid (in this situation) in food preservation. It doesn’t use a replacement filter because it’s not a filter. Their compressor design does not require cleaning because of the way it’s designed. They use metal shelving on the doors and tempered shelves on the interior. They offer a max cool in the freezer and refrigeration sections to bring quick cool to just packed refrigerators. The crisper drawers control and introduce humidity where it’s needed most. It’s worth checking out.VikingRef

They have taken the Blomberg dishwasher as their own and with it have combined some of the best features found in many leading dishwashers on the market today. They offer two dishwashers, one with a third rack. Their third rack machine doesn’t cover the entire top of the dishwasher. This helps to accommodate large stemware on the second shelf. All models offer a third wash arm in the top of the stainless steel tub. While not the quietest at 48 dBa, it does offer a final rinse cycle at 167 degrees and their longest cycle is about 2 hours. That high temp final rinse, along with the fan assist, will aid in condensation drying which has become an industry standard.VikingDishwasher

Viking has the ingenuity of design engineers from 67 commercial divisions of Middleby working to bring commercial cooking to a residential environment. Viking Pro offers 2 year warranty.

There is so much I can’t fit into this blog, but come in and let me tell you the story of any piece in their line. Viking is definitely a company worth watching closely to see what new ways our lives will change in the kitchen in months and years to come.

When you think about coffee what’s the first thing that comes to mind? It very well may be Starbucks, but for me it’s all about the bean! There are many roasts to choose from along with many local coffee bean companies around Orlando. Fresh beans equal fresh, delicious coffee. We here at Aggressive Appliances have several built-in machines that provide you that personalized “get going” cup.

AAcoffeebeans2

Miele built-in coffee systems friendly usage make it easy to take you through many options to get that fresh cup of Joe. Every “coffee head” is after that perfect cup! The Miele machine also offers a color option and can come plumbed or non-plumbed.

AAcoffeebeans3

Wolf, Gaggenau, Thermador, Jenn-Air, and Bosch all offer these types of built-in products as well. It seems pretty simple and, in my opinionated taste buds, much more spectacular as compared to Starbucks and others. These units fit perfect in your customized kitchens, morning bars, guest suites, etc. So why not savor a fresh brewed cup, save yourself money, and make your personalized coffee before you take off in the mornings? That’s the question. We can help you explore your answer…AAChefJohnCoffee
