Investing in Camouflage

AA-Camo

I tried to buy an integrated refrigerator…but I couldn’t find one. (My appliance version of the joke “I tried to buy a camouflage shirt but couldn’t find one”). Exactly what DO refrigeration and camouflage have in common? A whole lot! Kitchens today are disappearing into cabinetry to create seamless, integrated looks. When opening any kitchen cabinetry door or drawer don’t be surprised if you find perfect produce, creamy milk, or fine wines. How can you make a great investment in your home with the appliance industry’s version of camouflage?

Most products we buy (think cars and boats) begin to depreciate drastically the moment they’re put into service. There are however a few products that not only hold their value, but in fact enhance the overall value of a home. Integrated refrigeration is one such product. Integrated refrigeration is virtually indistinguishable from your custom cabinetry. These products can be designed into your kitchen with incredible location flexibility. Here are pictures of several units as captured on an iPhone 6. Pricing is MSRP* (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price).

Go Pound on Rocks

FPL-4Thankfully, we no longer need to beat our clothing on stones by a river, scrape them across a washboard, or use a machine that can catch arms, hair, small animals, etc, if you weren’t careful (see said torture device below).FPL-5

We have options. Top loading machines (with or without agitators) and front load machines, are the choices currently on the market. Could laundry (I dare say) be a joy?! Fun!? I bet you want to know! My current personal favorite is a little known, but an outstanding performing brand from New Zealand, Fisher & Paykel.

Fisher-Paykel-logo1

They offer three top loading washing machines with two AeroCare dryer options in electric and gas. Their washers clean 22 lbs of laundry with a 49 dBA sound rating. So if quiet and large loads are important to you….keep reading. Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive™ machines have three important parts that make their machines wash so well.

FPL-6

A direct-drive motor, flexible agitator, and a computer all work together to adjust to the size of the load. The computer gives feedback to the machine so it adjusts spin speed and water levels, all in the name of clothing care. With less parts and less water usage, you have a machine that can clean and doesn’t require a whole lot of maintenance. Fisher & Paykel laundry is all about clothing care, getting the dirt out of the grimiest loads while being gentle on your delicates, too. Their agitator model offers three water levels using WashSmart™ (giving you a true fill to the top option). The water levels in the non-agitator models rise to the level of the clothing in the wash basin using AquaSmart™ technology (great for energy savings). It is large enough to hold comforters and blankets.FPL-7

If you would like a more deluxe look, their glass top model with the matching glass top dryer is also it’s most chemical resistant surface. And check out how sleek they look…

FPL-2

Their machines come with a full 2 year parts and labor warranty, with 8 additional years on the direct drive motor. With models starting at $799 for the washer, and $799 for the electric dryer….they are also well within reach of most laundry room daydreams or your soon to be reality. Stop in today to see them for yourself and start making laundry day an actual joy!

Garlic as a Fruit

Pysanky-1With Easter just over a week away I’m transported back to memories of my Ukrainian grandmother, Anna. It was a cherished holiday for her as it is for many. She was born and raised in the Ukraine. She worked hard in the fields and would often tell me stories of her difficult, funny, and interesting life. Food was always involved and so was card playing.

Pysanky-4

She had great love and pride for her children, her family, her garden, her pierogies, and prayed over her bible so much it was worn thin from turning the pages filled with prayer cards from lost loved ones. She taught me the art of egg decorating, babka tasting, how to knead dough for pierogies, gave me my love of fresh horseradish and beets, not to leave out the importance of raw garlic. She considered raw garlic a fruit and ate it as such. Yup, just like an apple.

Pysanky-2

She didn’t have a grand kitchen, but she did have a grand soul that filled her kitchen and the hearts of anyone she knew. On her small stove she fried her pierogies with copious amounts of butter and onions, baked her Easter breads, and boiled the eggs we intricately decorated with beeswax and deep colored dyes. You may never have met my sweet Babchi, but if you like trying new things, click on the pictures within this blog and find out how to make your own Ukrainian Easter eggs (pysanky) or make a babka with this recipe given to me by my cousin Laura Stasiuk.

LaurasBabkaBabchi was one of many that taught me the value of family, traditions, and doing things together.  Many summers were spent watching her roll out dough for her endless supply of pierogies on her kitchen table, while talking, laughing, singing, and dancing. She taught me to find joy in simple pleasures like feeling the earth under my feet, the smell of fresh mint rubbed between fingers, or growing and drying fresh grown chamomile flowers for tea. She taught me how to appreciate all the gifts in life, big and tiny.

Enjoy your families now and always.  And to all of you….ya tebe lyublyu (я тебе люблю) which means….”I love you” in Ukrainian. I wish you all a “Babchi” in your life. Photo credits to my dear Aunt Gloria McNamara, Anna’s daughter.

Brown Bagging It

brownbagIn a day and age when fast food is EVERYWHERE, what is a person to do when they want quick, satisfying meals for lunch? Today is National “Pack Your Lunch Day” so to pay homage to it here are a few suggestions to get your creative juices flowing and help you come up with delicious ways to pack a quick, tasty, healthy, and easy lunch.Avocado

Avocados are popping up in so many recipes I see online. They are easy to find, easy to carry, and packed full of nutrients. Who doesn’t love the sound of “good fat”? Slice them and put them on a turkey sandwich, cube them and put them in a tomato salad, or mash them up with a hard boiled egg and make a creamy egg salad to smear on your favorite artisan bread.  Eggs

Speaking of eggs, they are another staple for a grab-and-go lunch. Hard boiled eggs are a great way to eat breakfast or lunch on the run. Packed with protein, they will also keep hunger at bay for a good stretch of time. Carrots and hummus, snow peas and salads, crackers and cheese, cut up leftover meat from last night’s dinner, cheese sticks, peanut butter, yogurt, clementine oranges, and olives are all great additions to a brown bag lunch. Heck, any fruit or vegetable can be easily added to your meal. It does take more planning and some thoughtful time to get enough quick things together to bring lunch, but your taste buds, mind, body, health, and bank account will thank you!PotSalPic

Here is a modified version of a recipe my mom used to make as a quick dinner that I now use for lunch because I like it so much! It is filling, delicious, and easy to grab and make if you have access to a microwave where you happen to be lunching. This can also be made ahead and brought in a container. I made my recipe pictured above with a steamed bag of whole green beans instead of the canned beans in my recipe below. It’s so, so good!!! Please leave some of your favorite grab-and-go ideas in the comments below for others to try. We could all use delicious, healthy options for lunch. Happy brown-bagging it! ChrissyWarmPotRecipe

As if brewing up your favorite K-cup of tea, coffee, or hot cocoa weren’t enough, you can also dispense hot water. From an app on your phone you can also schedule just when your hot water should be ready to go. Imagine climbing out of bed, pushing a button and having hot water or your Keurig dispenser ready to go…no preheat time required because the refrigerator followed your programmed schedule. The hot water can also be dispensed at a specific temperature using 4 presets, think soup and oatmeal temperatures. While it dispenses the screen displays how many ounces (or mL) have come out. That’s awesome!

Some other features? With the Precise Fill function, the dispenser will let you select how much water to dispense. So, for instance, if you need 3/4 cups of water for your cookies, you can select that amount and the refrigerator will dispense that amount. There’s a perfect temp drawer that also lights up different colors depending on the setting so you don’t have to guess as to which you picked. There are three settings.

GECafeRefDrwr

This refrigerator offers a dual evaporation system called TwinChill™ evaporators. They regulate odors and humidity independently in the freezer and refrigerator sections. Why would this be important to you? Because it will keep your food fresher, longer.

GECafeRefLED

The counter-depth model boasts a 22.2 cf capacity, while the standard depth offers 27.8 cf. With a MSRP of $3300 and beautiful, bright LED lighting it’s clear to see why this might be a refrigerator you would want to take a look at on our showroom floor. See you soon!
